The fluid in the rad is prevented to enter the engine full blast by the Thermostat, which will open at a determined Temp. As the wax (or any type of element inside the Thermostat) expands, it will provide a way for water from the rad to come in contact with the engine's. Cooling is done.
If you close the rad front to the wind, there might be an increment in temp in the rad's water, but at 30 F (you don't say Celsius so I believe you are an American), which will shorten the cycle at which the water enters the engine, but in reality it will not increase performance or anything like that, which IS controlled by the Temp at the Thermostat. The engine's Temp is and still will be set at the Temp the Thermostat operates.
Things are different if the quantities (volume of coolant, thermal energy produced by engine, etc) are bigger, the installing a blockage in front of the Rad will make a difference in reducing the heating cycle of the cooling fluid in the Rad. Your Isuzu is probably about 150 cu in. It's not a big block.

3 pairs of gloves isn't going to help you any more and it can end up being more harm than good, just stick to one pair. Also if you're not doing so already, you really need to dry the gloves out each night because if you put the gloves on each day any they are wet then your hands are definitely going to be cold.
You may want to think about getting a good pair of mittens. I personally prefer gloves but mittens do keep your hands warmer.

Silicone gloves would be great for the hands, but might not be long enough. Some auto parts stores sell Kevlar sleeves that go above the elbow. They are worn to protect mechanics from burning themselves on hot engine parts. You could wear the sleeves with silicone gloves over the top.
