I believe your thorny weed may be horse nettle. It's very persistent, and you're right about the thorns going right through leather gloves! Nasty, nasty weed. If you're not averse to using chemicals, RoundUp will eliminate it if applied properly.
I've posted a link where you'll find info on eliminating weeds.

That weedblocker fabric is pretty useless stuff, isn't it!

with the type of fruit you descibed it could be your dreaded paddy melons.if squashed they do indeed look like melon seeds.they have a distinct smell.do they have tiny thorns down the stripes? to rid of these pull them out and dispose of in the garbage and not the compost

If you can post a picture or tell us what zone you are in that might help a little bit. Not every place can have the same thing growing. So I cant help you on this one.

Ones from the dollar store. They are thin and very flexible. They also have little rubber dots on the palms and fingers which make it easy to grip the weeds.

I'm not fond of garden gloves. I use work gloves that I found at the dollar store. They have leather on the palms and there is gray/red striped cotton material on them, too. You can buy these work gloves in other places. I love them. No stickers/thorns can make it through the leather. They last forever, too.

Here's a link to a pic of what I'm talking about:
